“I wonder how many people I’ve looked at all my life and never seen?”
On Saturday, 1/25/14, I met up with Peggy. I had found her through Forumosa, a popular Taiwanese forum. We climbed Elephant Mountain while conversing.
View of Taipei from the top of the mountain.
Peggy is 22 years old and a recent graduate of University of British Columbia (UBC), where she majored in Japanese. She was born in Taiwan, but moved to Vancouver at the age of 2. She’s essentially a CBC, or Canadian Born Chinese.
She returned to Taiwan in November to work and live in Taiwan, as well as get in touch with her roots. Same as me. She begins work on February 5 at a Taiwanese travel agency, right after Chinese New Years.
Peggy is familiar with BC bud, although she prefers drinking alcohol. She can also make a mean flower thing in a vase, professional status at weddings. Her Mandarin and Taiwanese are around my level, probably better.
Upon climbing down from the mountain, both our legs trembled when we shifted our weight to our toes. I ain’t proud to say that.
We got along well. Since we’re both here for at least a couple of years, we’ll probably become pretty good friends.
Peggy has been met, but I wonder… how many people have I looked at all my life and never seen?
